Picture Jasper is a microcrystalline variety of quartz and, like most members of the quartz family, has a hardness on the Mohs scale ranging between 6.5 and 7 making it fairly durable but still breakable. Picture Jasper is named for its "picturesque" patterns of brown and tan that tend to make it look like a landscape and the more varied coloration and patterns seem to be the most sought-after.
