Bloodstone is an opaque chalcedony which makes it a member of the quartz family with a Mohs Hardness Scale rating of 6.5 to 7 that is well known for its unique coloration of dark green and red spots or splotches creating a distinctly almost "blood-like" pattern which is what's given it its name.
Bloodstone has been seen in many cultures with spiritual and metaphysical symbolism. Christians for decades have affiliated Bloodstone with a legend stating the red patterns were created when Christ's blood apparently touched the earth when he was crucified. As such, Bloodstone has been affiliated by practitioners of all faiths and spiritualities as a healing stone for helping to recover from the effects of blood-borne illnesses to even assisting with detoxification of the blood and liver. It's been said to help increase vitality and to help come to terms with one's own mortality while also serving as a talisman for those who are ill to help recover from symptoms even if the illness can't be cured.
